What keyword density is
Keyword density is how often a term appears relative to your total word count, written as a percentage. It is the quickest way to see which words dominate a piece of writing.
The formula is simple: divide the number of times a keyword appears by the total number of words, then multiply by 100. For example, a keyword used 12 times in a 600-word article has a density of (12 / 600) x 100 = 2%.
What a good keyword density is
There is no official target. Many SEOs treat 1 to 2 percent as a reasonable range, and the Yoast plugin suggests 0.5 to 3 percent.
The important point: keyword density is not a Google ranking factor. Use it to catch accidental over-use (keyword stuffing), not to chase a magic number. Write naturally first, then paste your draft into the free word counter to confirm no single term dominates the page.
How to check density with this tool
Type or paste your content into the editor. The Analytics panel then shows:
- Common Keywords — your most-used terms, each with its density percentage.
- Main Keyword — enter any term to see its exact count and density.
Everything runs in your browser, so your text is never uploaded. For a full breakdown of every metric it reports, see what the tool measures.
